NEWS UPDATE:
On April 14th police killed a cougar in Chicago. Here it trots behind an unaware officer shortly before its death. DNA analysis has demonstrated that this young male, which may have been about 2 years old, was related to cougars in the Black Hills of South Dakota and had passed through southeastern Wisconsin earlier this year. The sad end to his journey, possibly more than 800 miles, points out the need for east-west dispersal corridors leading to good habitat in the Midwest and the Appalachians.
A number of north-south corridors are being assembled in the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians. The Wildlands Project is a leader in coordinating these efforts. Recently, they described the Ocala to Osceola Greenway, a first step that might allow Florida panthers to disperse to good habitat in the southern Appalachians.
